Spring is here and it’s time to talk mulch! Why is mulch so important? Well, there are a few different reasons.
COLD WEATHER
During cold snaps, mulch can be used to create a nice, insulated bed for your plants. It can trap heat and moisture, helping the ground to remain warmer than the air temperature. This will help protect the plant roots during a frost or freeze event.
WARM WEATHER
In warm weather, mulch helps to trap in moisture so that your plant roots don’t dry out so quickly. This can be very helpful as we can experience some drastic heat waves in North Carolina.
WEED CONTROL
Mulch helps with weed control. A good layer of mulch can block sun from hitting the soil surface, which means that weed seeds don’t receive the proper light to germinate. Mulch can also suffocate existing weeds by blocking sunlight and airflow.
OTHER BENEFITS
Mulch is a great tool against erosion. Mulch protects the soil from rainfall, helping to absorb water and pass it to the soil, instead of rain washing away the soil. Organic mulches also break down overtime, providing the soil with nutrients and build stronger, healthier soils erode less.
Mulch can also be a great aesthetic addition to your garden. Not only does it have many functional uses, but can make your beds look clean, polished, neat. There are many colors and textures of mulch to choose from, making it a customizable experience.
