PLANT YOUR TREES BEFORE THEY FREEZE!

Our fall shipments are arriving and we have a beautiful assortment of trees that are great to plant this fall. You might be a bit nervous to plant such large purchases before winter, but fall is actually one of the best times to plant trees!

WHY PLANT NOW?

During the Fall season, tree roots have time to develope and grow without being stressed by the heat of summer. Autumnal rains also allows the tree roots to establish quickly.

Trees also are dormant during winter, which means that their growth, metabolism, and energy requirements slow down. You can plant trees well into the winter as long as the ground is not frozen, which is not very common in the Raleigh area.

TREE CARE & WATERING

Just remember that trees still need to be watered when trying to get established. So if there is not much rain, water your new trees thoroughly about three times per week if the soil feels dry in the fall, and about once every 10-14 days in the winter. Apply the water directly over the root ball and planting area.

Keep in mind, there is no need to fertilize or prune your trees just yet. Typically, within the first year of planting, it is best to allow your tree to recover from the stress of being transplanted.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

When getting ready to plant your trees, there are 4 core things you’ll want to consider:

LOCATION

Think about how much space your tree will need once it reaches maturity. Make sure there’s enough room for the roots and canopy to grow without interfering with buildings, power lines, or other plants.

REQUIRMENTS

Is your tree a sun lover or does it prefer shade? Consider whether the spot gets morning or afternoon sun, and how much sunlight your tree needs throughout the day.

SOIL & DRAINAGE

Pay attention to how wet the area gets after rain. Does water drain quickly, or does it tend to pool? Take a look at your soil, too. If you have heavy clay soil, adding compost can help improve soil structure and nutrient availability.

COMMITMENT

Be committed! A tree is an investment of both money and time—and, hopefully, one you’ll enjoy for many years to come. Taking the time to choose the right location and give your tree a good start will help set it up to thrive for years ahead.
