Japanese Maples (Acer palmatum) are beautiful ornamental trees.  They are the perfect accent to your landscaping.  No matter where you find a place for them they are sure to become a focal point.  As strong and bold as they are, they still manage to bring a bit of serenity to the landscape with their gracefulness.  Available in many sizes from dwarfs ideal for bonsai and containers to upright, mounded and weeping varieties.  They range from 2 to 30ft tall.  The leaves can be standard shaped or delicate and lacy.  They come in a rainbow of colors and many put on a show through the seasons.  Some start as a gorgeous red in spring, change to green during the summer and are yellow or orange by fall.  Others remain the same color spring through autumn. Some have delightful bark colors that dazzle in winter including coral bark maples, such as Sango Kaku, and the yellow and salmon bark Bihou Japanese Maple.

Plant them in well-drained soil protected from hot afternoon sun and strong winds.  During extreme heat and drought be sure to give them a little extra water.

Japanese Maples are sought after plants that are often said to be wise investments- adding value, as well as beauty, to your landscape.
