Our Favorite Japanese Maples

Japanese Maples are graceful ornamental trees that make excellent specimen plants in the garden. They offer year-round interest from the first flush of spring leaves to summer foliage to blazing fall color. Some, such as Coral Bark, also have colorful bark that brighten up the landscape in winter. Dwarf varieties make superb plants for containers or small spaces, while others grow into medium sized trees that make a bold statement in the landscape. Here are 10 of our favorite cultivars:

 

1. CORAL BARK

Size: 15’-20’H x 15’-20’W

Form: Upright, vase-shaped

Leaf Color: Green in summer; yellow in fall

Bark: Coral-colored

Light: Full to part sun

 

2. BLOODGOOD

Size: 15’-20’H x 15’x20’W

Form: Broad upright

Leaf Color: Burgundy in summer, scarlet red in fall

Bark: Red-black

Light: Full sun to part shade

 

3. KATSURA

Size: 10’-12’H x 10’-12’W

Form: Upright, compact, vase-shaped

Leaf Color: Golden-orange with pink edges in spring, bright green in summer, orange and yellow in fall

Light: Sun to part sun

 

4. ACONITIFOLIUM

Size: 15’-30’H x 15’-30’W

Form: Upright, round

Leaf Color: Dark green; crimson in fall.

Light: Partial Shade

 

5. SEIRYU

Size: 10-15’H x 6-8’W

Form: Upright, vase-shaped

Leaf Color: Green; Purple-brown and then red in fall

Light: Sun to partial sun

 

6. CRIMSON QUEEN

Size: 10’H x 10’W

Form: Dwarf, weeping

Leaf color: Burgundy; Scarlet in fall
